Nashville's Iroquois Steeplechase dazzles with horses, hounds and 85 years of tradition

The Iroquois Steeplechase, an 85-year-old tradition in Nashville, once again drew crowds with its mix of horse racing and foxhound spectacle. Over 25,000 spectators gathered to watch the event, where more than 20 foxhounds took part in the opening parade before the races began. Founded by members of the Hillsboro Hounds fox hunting club, the race has deep ties to the sport. Steeplechase racing and fox hunting often overlap, with many horses transitioning from one discipline to the other. The hounds, guided by experienced hunting dogs, wore GPS-equipped collars as they ran alongside the horses.

The event offers a total of $730,000 in prize money, making it a major draw for competitors. The foxhounds play a key role in the festivities, kicking off the races and giving spectators a taste of traditional hunting culture. One hound, however, became so distracted by the crowd’s attention that she strayed off course—leading to her exclusion from future events. For the hounds, the race provides both excitement and exposure. Their participation highlights the connection between steeplechase racing and fox hunting, two sports that have long been intertwined.

The Iroquois Steeplechase remains a beloved tradition, blending competitive racing with the spectacle of foxhounds. With thousands of fans attending each year, the event continues to showcase the bond between horses, hounds, and the sport’s rich history.
