Eight children killed in Louisiana mass shooting by their father
Eight children were killed in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, on 19 April. The victims were seven siblings and their cousin, aged between three and eleven. Their father, Shamar Elkins, carried out the attack before fleeing the scene. The children were shot with an assault-style weapon, despite Elkins having a prior felony firearms conviction. His wife and another woman were also wounded in the attack. Elkins later died following a police chase, though investigators have not confirmed whether his death was self-inflicted or caused by officers.
A funeral service was held for the children at Summer Grove Baptist Church over Mother’s Day weekend. The programme included personal tributes, detailing each child’s personality and hobbies. Politicians and faith leaders, including Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, attended to pay their respects.
Governor Landry ordered flags across the state to fly at half-staff in honour of the victims. The investigation into the shooting remains active, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances. The tragedy has left a community in mourning. Funeral services marked the lives of the eight children, while the investigation into their deaths continues. State officials have honoured the victims with tributes and gestures of remembrance.
