Moana Hope exposes homophobic attack from retired women's footballer

Former AFLW player Moana Hope has accused a recently retired women's footballer of sending her a homophobic message. The incident involved a doctored Instagram photo with a slur, which the sender mistakenly shared with Hope herself. She has since taken steps to address the issue publicly and formally.

The confrontation began when the retired player took one of Hope's Instagram images and added a homophobic caption. The edited photo was then sent directly to Hope, who quickly captured a screenshot before the sender deleted it. Hope immediately responded, blocked the account, and later shared the offensive image online with a strong condemnation.

Hope has given the player an ultimatum: report herself to her former club by Friday or face public identification. This is not the first time Hope has spoken out about abuse. In August 2022, she highlighted the harassment she endured during a local women's match in Melbourne.

Throughout her career and beyond, Hope has faced repeated online attacks and personal slurs. Her decision to escalate this latest incident reflects her ongoing stance against discrimination in sport.

Hope is now formally reporting the player involved. She has made it clear that she will not tolerate homophobic behaviour, whether on or off the field. The outcome of her complaint—and the player's response—will determine the next steps in this dispute.
