Messerpokallauf 2026 Challenges Runners in Thuringian Forest's Toughest Trails

The Steinbach 1907 Winter Sports Club will host the Messerpokallauf on June 20, 2026. This challenging trail race winds through the Thuringian Forest, offering distances from a quarter marathon up to a 50-kilometre ultramarathon. Organisers have wished all participants good luck ahead of the event. The race takes runners across legendary routes, including parts of the Messer Trail, Rennsteig, Luther Trail, and Breitunger Rennweg. The terrain covers meadows, dense forests, and rugged logging trails, making it a highly technical event. A cool, shaded climate from the forest canopy provides relief during the demanding courses.

The marathon distance features 1,550 metres of elevation gain, while the ultramarathon’s ‘king’s stage’ climbs 2,000 metres. For those seeking shorter options, Nordic walkers and hikers can join 10.6-kilometre or 21.1-kilometre loop courses. Each route tests endurance and skill in equal measure. Participants will face steep climbs, uneven paths, and scenic woodland tracks. The event caters to both elite trail runners and casual hikers, with varied distances and challenges. The club’s preparations ensure a well-organised race through one of Germany’s most iconic forests.
