McLachlan unveils new single titled "Gravity"
Sarah McLachlan has released "Gravity" as the second single from her upcoming album "Better Broken." This tender piano ballad delves deeper into McLachlan's emotional landscape, exploring the complexity of her relationship with her older daughter.
"Gravity" conveys both quiet heartache and profound empathy in its loving blessings. The song was inspired by the challenges they faced together, including a period of a combative and fraught relationship that led them to attend counseling. McLachlan wrote "Gravity" as a message of unconditional love and acceptance, aiming to tell her daughter, "I’ve always loved you and want the best for you, and you’re perfect the way you are."
The song is piano-driven and arranged by Patrick Warren. It was recorded mainly at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. "Better Broken" marks McLachlan’s tenth studio album and her first release with Concord Records. Production was handled by Tony Berg and Will Maclellan. Featured musicians on the album include Wendy Melvoin, Matt Chamberlain, Benny Bock, and Greg Leisz.
The music video for "Gravity" was directed by Lauren Wade, produced by Columinati / Zebulon Griffin, and features cinematography by Mark Evans. "Gravity" has resonated strongly with listeners, making it one of the standout tracks on the album, with an immediate and intense emotional connection reported when played to audiences.
"Gravity" addresses themes of familial struggle, misunderstanding, anxiety, and healing through communication. It reflects the emotional journey McLachlan and her daughter underwent, moving from conflict to a place of compassion and mutual understanding. The lyrics and tone convey reassurance and steadfast love—described metaphorically as "gravity," something constant and unyielding despite hardship.
"Better Broken" was released on September 19, 2025, with "Gravity" serving as the second single supporting the album’s exploration of personal and social themes through intimate songwriting. The album is now available for listening online.
