Man dies in Almaty drainage ditch after heavy rain and suspected alcohol use

A man fell into a drainage ditch in Almaty and died, with preliminary reports suggesting he was intoxicated at the time, our website reports.

Earlier, details of the fatal incident emerged online. According to initial accounts, the man's body was found in the ditch, apparently pulled into a pipe. Utility workers responding to a clog report discovered the body instead of debris.

Preliminary findings indicate the man was under the influence of alcohol and fell into the ditch during heavy rain.

The Almaty Police Department confirmed that a criminal case has been opened in connection with the incident.

"Initial investigations suggest the man, while intoxicated, lost his balance and fell into the ditch. He died at the scene from his injuries," police stated.

Authorities are currently conducting further investigative procedures.

Notably, Almaty's utility services were placed on high alert on April 16 and 17 due to heavy rainfall.

This tragedy echoes a similar incident nearly nine years ago, when a young woman died after falling into a drainage ditch in Almaty. Witnesses, including one who recorded video of the event, reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of Al-Farabi Avenue and Furmanov Street.

Earlier, in the Martuk District of Aktobe Region, rescuers found the body of a 10-year-old boy after nearly three weeks of searching. The child was discovered in the Ilek River, where hundreds had been searching day and night.
