The sky is visible in the background, and the scene is likely the aftermath of a flood that has caused the road to be closed.

Magdalena Contreras gears up for rainy season with flood-prevention upgrades

Magdalena Contreras has completed major preparations ahead of the rainy season. The borough’s mayor, Fernando Mercado Guaida, announced that new infrastructure and cleaning efforts will help prevent flooding. Last year’s heavy rains caused damage in over 200 areas, affecting many families. Crews have installed 188 new storm drains to handle excess water. They also cleaned 6,270 linear metres of existing drains, ensuring smoother water flow. In addition, 20 tons of debris were removed from drainage systems to prevent blockages.

Workers rehabilitated 168 wells and desilted 254 others, improving their ability to manage rainwater. The borough also restored 84 hectares of ravines, reducing erosion and flood risks. Over 129 tons of waste were cleared from natural waterways, while another 50 tons of bulky waste were collected from neighbourhoods. The measures come after last year’s intense rainfall caused widespread disruption. With upgraded drainage, restored ravines, and cleared waterways, officials aim to protect homes and infrastructure. The mayor has declared the borough fully prepared for the upcoming rainy season.
