Legendary Malaysian artist Jalil Hamid dies at 69 after decades of film and music

Malaysian singer and actor Jalil Hamid has died at the age of 69. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at 12:30pm on May 4, 2023. Known for his work in film and music, Jalil left behind a legacy spanning over four decades in the entertainment industry. Jalil began his career in the early 1980s, becoming a familiar face in Malaysian cinema and music. He starred in well-known films such as Baginda (1997), Zombi Kampung Pisang (2007), Lelaki Harapan Dunia (2014), and Bisik Pada Langit (2017). His performances earned him accolades, including Best Supporting Actor for Baginda at the 13th Malaysia Film Festival and Best Supporting Actor (Drama) for Calon Syurga at the 2016 Anugerah Skrin.

Beyond acting, Jalil was also recognised for his music. Songs like *Ayam*, *Raya*, and *Makan* became popular among fans over the years. In July 2022, Jalil underwent surgery and was later diagnosed with an enlarged heart. His health struggles led to significant weight loss—around 30 kg—and a loss of appetite. However, by 2024, he had shared that his condition was improving, allowing him to eat more substantial meals again. After his passing, Jalil’s body was taken to Masjid Al-Munawwarah in Shah Alam, Selangor. He will be laid to rest at the Section 21 Shah Alam Muslim Cemetery following the Asar prayers.

Jalil Hamid’s death marks the end of a long and influential career in Malaysian entertainment. His contributions to film and music will be remembered by audiences and colleagues alike. The burial will take place later today in Shah Alam.
