Krasnoyarsk Endures Record -40°C Freeze Without Heating Failures
Krasnoyarsk’s 2025/26 heating season started late but faced extreme cold by January. The Siberian city recorded its lowest temperatures in two decades, with thermometers plunging to -40°C. Despite the harsh conditions, the local energy provider kept homes warm without interruption. The heating season began unusually late on September 23, 2025. Before the cold arrived, the Siberian Generating Company carried out extra inspections and increased maintenance on its systems. Fuel reserves at power stations were also stockpiled beyond standard requirements.
January 2026 brought the most severe freeze in 20 years, testing the city’s infrastructure. However, modernised energy equipment and upgraded heating networks helped reduce wear and tear. These improvements allowed the company to maintain steady operations throughout the winter. The season ended on May 6, 2026, lasting just 225 days—the shortest in 17 years. Now, preparations for the next heating period are already in motion. Hydraulic tests will soon begin, leading to temporary hot water restrictions across Krasnoyarsk as engineers check and repair equipment.
The city’s heating systems withstood record-low temperatures without failures. Upgrades to equipment and careful planning ensured reliable service throughout the winter. With repairs and inspections now underway, officials aim to prepare for the challenges of the next season.
