Krasnodar's Sambo Tournament Honors Victory Day with Elite Rivalry and Patriotic Pride
Krasnodar’s annual Sambo tournament took place this week at the 'City of Sport' complex, marking Victory Day with fierce competition. Organised by the interregional movement Otechestvo, the event drew top athletes from across Russia, all vying for cash prizes up to 1 million rubles. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev attended, highlighting the tournament’s role in honouring the legacy of the Great Patriotic War. The competition unfolded in Krasnodar’s modern Sambo Palace, a venue equipped with four mats and seating for 3,000 spectators. This year’s event featured elite athletes leading masterclasses as part of the Valor of Russia programme. Alongside the matches, a cultural programme explored the history of the war, reinforcing the tournament’s patriotic theme.
Krasnodar Territory remains a hub for sambo, with over 85,600 registered practitioners. The region’s dominance was clear as the team from Armavir secured first place, while Crimea and Novorossiysk followed in second and third. Kondratyev praised the athletes’ resilience and stressed the importance of preserving wartime memory through sports and public events. *Otechestvo*, the movement behind the tournament, focuses on blending athletic competition with patriotic education. The event’s timing—aligned with Victory Day—ensures its significance extends beyond sports, serving as a tribute to historical sacrifice.
The tournament concluded with Armavir’s team taking the top prize, earning between 300,000 and 1 million rubles. Beyond the competition, the event reinforced Krasnodar’s reputation as a leader in sambo development. Officials and organisers alike emphasised the role of such gatherings in keeping the memory of the Great Patriotic War alive for future generations.
