Kazakhstan's Asem Orynbay claims gold as ISSF Shotgun World Cup kicks off
The ISSF Shotgun World Cup has begun in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Region, running from May 2 to 11, 2026. Organised by the Kazakhstan National Shooting Federation, the event has drawn 550 athletes from 42 countries. Competitors will vie for ranking points and Olympic quota places for Los Angeles 2028. The tournament opened with a strong performance from local favourite Asem Orynbay. She secured gold in the women’s skeet final, repeating her victory in the same event back in 2023. Jiang Yiting of China took silver, while Italy’s Martina Bartolomei claimed bronze.
Berik Asylov, President of the Kazakhstan National Shooting Federation and the country’s Prosecutor General, oversees the competition. As a ranking event for the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), the World Cup offers athletes a chance to boost their standings. Success here could also earn them spots at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The Almaty Region serves as the host location, with the federation ensuring all preparations meet international standards. The event’s scale reflects its importance, with participants travelling from across the globe to compete.
The first day’s results highlight Kazakhstan’s dominance in women’s skeet, with Orynbay defending her title. Athletes will continue competing over the next ten days, aiming for higher rankings and Olympic qualification. The tournament’s outcomes will shape future selections for the 2028 Games.
