Jamahl Mosley takes over as Pelicans' new head coach after Borrego's exit
The New Orleans Pelicans have named Jamahl Mosley as their new head coach. His appointment follows a season of underperformance and a coaching change in Orlando. The Pelicans moved quickly after parting ways with interim coach James Borrego.
Mosley arrives after five seasons with the Orlando Magic. His record there stood at 189 wins and 221 losses. Despite this, his teams reached the playoffs in each of the last three years.
His departure came after the Magic lost in the first round to the Detroit Pistons. Orlando’s management decided a change was needed, ending his tenure shortly after the defeat. In New Orleans, Borrego had taken over on an interim basis. He led the team for 70 games but managed only 24 wins against 46 losses. The Pelicans missed the postseason for a second consecutive year under his guidance. Borrego had hoped to secure the role permanently, but the organisation explored other options. Pelicans basketball operations chief Joe Dumars oversaw the search. While Borrego remained in consideration, Dumars also looked beyond the current staff for a fresh approach. The decision ultimately favoured Mosley’s experience and recent playoff track record.
Mosley now takes charge of a Pelicans side aiming to return to contention. His task will be to improve on last season’s results and steer the team back into playoff contention. The move marks a fresh start for both the coach and the franchise.
