How California's high cost of living reshaped one professor's American dream
Christiane Schroeter first arrived in the U.S. from Germany in 1999 as an exchange student. Over two decades later, she has established herself as a professor, author, and entrepreneur in California. Yet, despite her professional success, the state’s steep living costs have reshaped her financial outlook.
Schroeter’s journey in the U.S. began with a Fulbright scholarship in 2001, bringing her back to pursue a Ph.D. After earning her doctorate in 2005, she chose to remain in the country to build her career. By September 2007, she had joined the faculty at Cal Poly, where she now teaches innovation and entrepreneurship. That same December, she welcomed her daughter.
Beyond academia, Schroeter works as a leadership strategist, runs her own business, and hosts a podcast. She has also written books on entrepreneurship and professional growth. California’s coastal lifestyle, fresh local produce, and vibrant culture have kept her rooted in the state. However, the financial realities of living there have forced careful planning. Housing expenses dominate her monthly budget, while childcare and healthcare costs have stretched her family’s finances. These pressures have altered her view of what it means to be financially secure in America.
Schroeter has carved out a successful career in California, balancing teaching, consulting, and writing. But the high cost of living—particularly housing, childcare, and healthcare—has required constant adjustments. Her experience reflects the broader challenges many professionals face in one of the U.S.’s most expensive states.
