Halle's old concrete pipes become quirky outdoor seating through crowdfunding
"Huts for Halle": A Crowdfunding Campaign to Create Sheltered Youth Spaces
The Bürgerstiftung Halle (Halle Civic Foundation) has launched a crowdfunding campaign under the title "Huts for Halle" to bring to life an idea developed by a group of young people, supported by the foundation's "dazwischenfunken" team.
The Concept: During Halle's Youth Participation Day, it became clear that young people lack outdoor spaces where they can gather, protected from the weather, without disturbing others. In response, a working group—collaborating with the city's Open Space Planning Department and Parks and Green Spaces Office—identified suitable locations. Now, the first pilot project is about to take shape. Right by Thuringian Station, with a prime view of the volleyball courts, the first "Sitzröhren" (seating tubes) will be installed.
The Design: Upcycling meets coziness. Repurposed concrete drainage pipes are being transformed into sturdy outdoor meeting spots. Their curved shape naturally shields users from wind and rain, while their durable construction ensures longevity. Each tube will be fitted with high-quality wooden benches and tables.
Funds raised will cover heavy-duty transport for safe delivery, precise crane placement of the pipes, and materials for the interior build-out. Once the minimum goal for transport and construction is met, every additional euro will go toward planting a green roof of succulents. This will improve local climate conditions, provide heat protection, and create new habitats for insects.
The more support the project receives, the more succulents can be planted—making the initiative even more sustainable and visually appealing.
A successful project won't just benefit young people and adults, who will gain a weatherproof hangout for chatting, skating, and sports—free of entry fees or drink purchases. The entire neighborhood stands to gain. A lively, well-designed park enhances quality of life for all: families enjoy a safer, friendlier environment; residents benefit from an orderly and attractive green space; and athletes and walkers make use of the improved infrastructure.
