Government Unveils 530 Million Euro Flood Relief Plan for Affected Residents
Valencia Disaster Resilience Improvement Plan Unveiled by Government
In a meeting held at the Government Delegation in Valencia, the Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, presented a resilience-focused plan aimed at strengthening the affected territory against future floods. The proposed plan carries an investment of €530 million.
The plan encompasses regulatory reforms, a new risk map, and structural hydraulic actions. The primary objective is to adapt the territory to the increasing frequency of extreme events resulting from climate change, as stated by the Ministry. Aagesen asserted that the plan is not just about rebuilding the devastated municipalities, but also improving their resilience to better prepare them for any future disasters.
The associations of victims welcomed the plan, considering it a good start, albeit pending a thorough study. Their main concerns revolved around ensuring the security and suitability of the works, allocating necessary funds, and studying the actions to guarantee safety.
Most of the works under the plan are expected to be tendered by the end of this year, with construction commencing in 2026. Additionally, Aagesen highlighted other aids for the region's recovery, such as investments for water cycle infrastructures amounting to €500 million, currently in the final stages of processing. These funds will finance 100% of the repair of water supply, sanitation, and purification installations affected by the disaster.
In the midst of the meeting, emergency actions were also discussed, involving over 385 interventions in 87 municipalities. Furthermore, approximately €220 million has been set aside for these emergency actions.
The associations of victims requested that the plan extend its protection to commercial premises, municipal buildings, and industries, not just dwellings. They also emphasized the need for safe and territory-adapted works, regardless of the time or cost required.
The Iberdrola España's il·lumina plan, which involves investing €100 million to redesign the affected electrical grid, focusing on resilience measures and digitalization standards, may potentially complement the government's efforts in enhancing the region's resilience. However, specific details regarding the 530 million euro plan remain unavailable in the search results.
