Yet the loss of the child remains a profoundly tragic event, one that our organization takes as an urgent call to continue our active efforts to improve road safety in this particularly sensitive area.

Our organization is committed to sustainably enhancing safety by maintaining and strengthening existing measures. Above all, the 30 km/h speed limit in Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße will remain in place. This reduced speed restriction is a key step toward protecting all pedestrians, especially given the high foot traffic near local shops, the Action discount store, and the limited parking space along the street and in the residential neighborhood.

To further improve safety, weather-dependent construction work is scheduled for spring. This will include embedding the existing 30 km/h signs into the ground to permanently establish the speed limit. Additionally, a small pedestrian refuge island and a designated crossing will be installed near the Action store to make it significantly easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road.

Gera's mayor, Thomas Lenk, explains: "We are fully aware of our responsibility and are doing everything in our power to durably improve safety in this sensitive area. Our goal is to prevent similar tragedies in the future and to strengthen residents' confidence in a secure environment."
