Flooding danger escalates in Bangkok, with increasing risks along the Chao Phraya River.
High Alert for Potential Flooding in Bangkok: Temporary and Permanent Measures in Place Until Sunday
Bangkok, Thailand, faces the risk of flooding as high sea levels threaten low-lying areas near the Chao Phraya River until Sunday. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is coordinating closely with various agencies, including the Royal Irrigation Department, the Hydrographic Department, the Royal Thai Navy, and others, to monitor the situation and issue warnings as necessary.
The impending flood threat has prompted daily inspections of flood barriers and drainage infrastructure in the river and connected canals - Khlong Bangkok Noi, Khlong Mahasawt, and Khlong Phrakhanong. The city's permanent floodwalls, ranging from 2.8 to 3.5 meters above mean sea level (MSL), provide substantial protection, but there are 32 incomplete sections, known as "gapped barriers," which create vulnerability. To compensate, temporary flood defenses consisting of sandbags placed at heights of 2.4 to 2.7 meters above the MSL have been implemented.
So far, 21 permanent floodwall sections totaling approximately 2.58 kilometers have been finished in key locations, such as Si Phraya Pier in Bang Rak and Riverside Condo in Bang Kho Laem districts. Furthermore, four additional projects are under construction, with expected completion before the October flood season, and budget proposals and funding efforts are being prepared for additional segments.
As the Southwest monsoon continues to bring heavy rain to the Bangkok metropolitan area, residents living in northern and low-lying areas are advised to remain alert and avoid traveling through flood-prone zones. Farmers are also encouraged to prepare for potential weather-related damage. Weather alerts and vigilance remain essential as the monsoon persists, raising the likelihood of water accumulation and flash floods.

In light of the ongoing flooding threat in Bangkok, environmental scientists are closely monitoring the impact of heavy rains on the city's weather patterns. To complement the permanent floodwalls, temporary defenses made of sandbags have been installed at strategic locations to ensure optimal protection against potential environmental-science related disasters until Sunday.
