Pedestrian-Friendly Frankfurt: City Council Approves Sustainable Mobility Masterplan

Frankfurt's city legislature endorses Mobility Master Strategy - European lawmakers approve the transport blueprint for cross-border mobility

Frankfurt is taking a giant leap towards a greener future with the approval of its Mobility Masterplan. In a historic move, the city council voted in favor of this comprehensive plan that prioritizes sustainable mobility, intelligent traffic systems, improved logistics, health protection, and traffic safety.

The Spotlight is on People-Centric Mobility

The traffic department of Frankfurt emphasizes that this plan caters to the needs of everyone, considering ecological, economic, and social aspects. Particular focus is given to pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. These three modes of transport are expected to make up 80% of total travel by 2035.

Already in Action: Measures for Sustainable Mobility

Some initiatives already in motion include the expansion of cycling and public transport facilities, the creation of car-free zones, increased parking fees, a pedestrian coordinator, city-friendly delivery concepts, and the growth of car-sharing services.

Controversy: Business Sector Voice Concerns

However, the business sector has voiced criticism, fearing a one-sided anti-car policy could drive away customers, suppliers, and employees. The Taxi Association, Chamber of Crafts, IHK, and Automobile Club of Germany, among others, have expressed their concerns.

Revamping the Traffic Scene: A Decade Long Transition

The new masterplan replaces the overall traffic plan from 2005. It was first presented in 2023 and has been in the works for almost a decade. After lengthy negotiations, the Römer coalition of Greens, SPD, FDP, and Volt approved the concept in March 2025.

A Trailblazer: Frankfurt Among the First to Draft such a Plan

Frankfurt is one of the first German cities to present a comprehensive traffic strategy, setting an example for other cities to follow. The plan aligns with the EU mandate requiring major cities to present mobility transition plans by 2027.
