Deutsche Bahn rolls out last-minute fares to lure spontaneous travelers
This entirely new offering for long-distance trains provides both reliability and affordable travel, Michael Peterson, the head of Deutsche Bahn's long-distance services, told newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe in their Friday editions. He explained that the initiative also aims to attract new customer groups—people who might not initially consider rail travel and who tend to be more flexible in their planning.
Tickets will start at €6.99, with additional discounts available for BahnCard holders. Children will travel for free. On Saturdays and Sundays, passengers will be able to book trips for the following week.
"Starting May 9, our customers will be able to book last-minute fares for the first time," Peterson announced. The offer will initially run for six months, with the possibility of extension.
With this initiative, Deutsche Bahn is also fulfilling a long-standing request from travelers. Like other discount fares, these last-minute prices will be capacity-controlled, Peterson noted. This ensures the deals are only available on trains with remaining seats. According to Peterson, the chances of snagging a bargain are particularly high outside peak travel periods. However, the company still advises those who can plan ahead to book their tickets early.
