In the vibrant heart of Radebeul, the Saxon State Winery Schloss Wackerbarth kicked off the grape harvest season with flair. The winemakers expertly plucked the first batch of golden Goldriesling grapes, a Saxony specialty, right from the Paradise vineyard site. The early-ripe Solaris variety is expected to join in the fun shortly, although, unfortunately, due to weather-related yield reductions, Solaris won't be available as a young wine this year.

The Elbe Valley vineyards have been hit hard this year, with a late April frost causing around 80% losses to the crop. Despite secondary budding's best efforts to mitigate these losses, Martin Junge, the winery's spokesperson, diagnosed this year as not so promising, quality-wise, and anticipating a decreased harvest. Nevertheless, Saxony's vineyards will still bring in a harvest, albeit adjusted due to the unforeseen weather event.

Now, you might be wondering about the extent of damage caused by the late frost. Well, let me enlighten you on that. Late frosts can do a real number on grape buds and new shoots, potentially decreasing yields and affecting grape quality. It's a harsh reality for winemakers, requiring precise monitoring and timely action to mitigate losses.

Regardless, the winery is still eager to proceed with the harvest. The affected Goldriesling and Solaris grapes may not make an appearance as young wines this year, but the vineyards will certainly deliver some form of a harvest.
