Chicago's Focus Fairies Helps Girls Heal Through Magic and Mentorship
A Chicago mentoring group called Focus Fairies is helping young girls cope with violence through special events and support. The programme aims to teach self-love while giving participants a chance to feel like children again. Focus Fairies organises gatherings like tea parties where girls can step away from trauma and enjoy simple joys. Coach Jhe, one of the facilitators, describes these moments as a way for them to 'feel magical' and escape difficult experiences.
Mentors and therapists work with the girls to build confidence and self-worth. Coach Jhe encourages them to hold onto their true identities and recognise that trauma doesn’t last forever. The group also helps them access information about local events and resources.
Franklin Ballenger, the development director, has noticed how the programme creates a ripple effect. As girls transform their own lives, they inspire others to do the same. The focus remains on healing and empowerment through connection and creativity. The initiative continues to grow, offering girls in Chicago a safe space to rebuild their confidence. By blending mentorship with playful activities, Focus Fairies provides tools for recovery and self-discovery. The impact spreads as participants carry their newfound strength into their communities.
