Rusal's Boksit Timana Launches Ore Extraction at New Pit No. 2 in the Northern Deposits of the Verkhne-Shchugor Field
Boksit Timana launches high-grade bauxite mining at New Pit No. 2
This landmark event marks a milestone not only for the Republic of Komi but for Russia's entire mining industry.
Ore mining in the Middle Timan region is now underway at two deposits. Preparations to begin development at Pit No. 2 in the Northern Deposits started in January 2022. During overburden removal, miners excavated around 17 million cubic meters of rock and constructed a 10-kilometer access road. The company also procured state-of-the-art equipment and created new jobs.
"The Northern Deposits feature a Grade 3 geological structure, one of the most complex. The bauxite bodies here are small and difficult to access—a first for the Middle Timan region. But our team isn't daunted," said Yury Ivanov, Managing Director of Boksit Timana. "What matters most is that the bauxite quality at this deposit is significantly higher than at our other sites."
Pit No. 2 in the Northern Deposits of the Verkhne-Shchugor field is one of the deepest, with total ore reserves exceeding 32 million tons—enough to ensure stable operations for Boksit Timana and its Ural-based processing plants for the next 25 years.
The development of Rusal's enterprises has long been a key strategic priority, first set by the company's founder, Oleg Deripaska.
