Bacolod City unveils ₱45M heavy machinery to combat flooding and restore rivers

Bacolod City has acquired new heavy machinery to tackle flooding and improve river maintenance. The equipment, including a specialised mini amphibious excavator, was unveiled by Mayor Greg Gasataya on May 6, 2026. The purchase aims to address sediment buildup in critical waterways like the Mandalagan River. A recent hydrographic survey found that silt had reduced the depth of the Mandalagan River mouth to just one metre. Between October and December 2025, the Department of Public Works and Highways removed 2,120 tons of sediment from the river. The new machinery, costing over ₱45 million, includes a long-arm excavator, a dump truck, and the mini amphibious excavator.

The amphibious excavator is designed for narrow waterways and areas under bridges where standard equipment cannot reach. Mayor Gasataya inspected the new fleet at the Bacolod City Government Center. The city plans to use the machinery to speed up flood mitigation and river rehabilitation projects. The investment in specialised equipment comes as Bacolod strengthens its efforts against flooding. The mini amphibious excavator will allow crews to clear sediment in hard-to-reach sections of the Mandalagan River. Officials expect the new tools to improve drainage and reduce flood risks in the area.
