'Backrooms' Smashes Box Office with $118M Global Debut

The new horror film Backrooms has shattered box office records with a stunning global debut. Over its opening weekend, it earned $118 million worldwide, outperforming major rivals in the genre. The film’s success marks the strongest start for a horror release this year and a historic moment for distributor A24. Backrooms dominated cinemas across multiple regions, securing the top spot in over 30 countries. In the UK, it claimed first place with $5.6 million—the highest-ever opening for an A24 title and the biggest horror launch of 2024 so far. Latin America led the charge, bringing in $12.7 million, more than triple the previous best A24 debut in the region.

The film’s international performance was equally impressive, pulling in $36 million overseas. This figure surpassed *Scream 7*’s foreign opening of $33.1 million, a previous benchmark for the genre. Australia and New Zealand contributed $4.4 million, nearly doubling *Scream 7*’s $2.5 million debut in the same markets. Globally, *Backrooms* outpaced several recent horror hits in their first weekends. It exceeded *Weapons* by 62%, *Scream 7* by 22%, *Five Nights at Freddy’s 2* by 5%, and *Final Destination: Bloodlines* by 4%. Its $118 million total also broke the franchise record set by *Scream 7* ($97.1 million), cementing its place as a box office standout.

With its record-breaking numbers, Backrooms has set a new standard for horror films in 2024. The film’s strong performance across key markets highlights its broad appeal and commercial strength. Its success also reinforces A24’s position as a major player in the genre.
