Avalanches are deliberately detonated in the foothills of the Kuznetsk Alatau on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Rewritten Article:
With the arrival of spring, the Kuznetsk Alatau section of the Krasnoyarsk Railroad, just like any other, starts artificial avalanche control to prevent natural avalanches from dumping onto the tracks. Across the Krasnoyarsk route from Biskekzy to Mezhdurechensk, a total of 18 potentially hazardous sections have been identified, with the risk of snow slides. The most dangerous avalanche-prone stretch of the Krasnoyarsk Railroad is the Luzhba-Charysh passage, located at the border of Kemerovo Oblast and Khakassia. Preventive blasts have been conducted there.
Work took place on a 2-kilometer section of the track that runs close to the base of cliffs between the Ailatanu Mountains and the Tom River.
The accumulated snow on the slopes, as reported by specialists at the anti-avalanche station, reached a critical mass under the harsh March warming conditions and could have cascaded onto the tracks at any moment. The highest snowpack here measures 2 meters.
Watch the video of avalanche control efforts on the Southern stretch of the Trans-Siberian Railway:
The blasts were set off during the technical window, when no trains were in motion. Approximately 15,000 cubic meters of snow slid off the slopes - mostly it ended up in the snow-collecting trenches below the mountain, but whatever ended up on the tracks was cleared using machinery.
The situation remains under control: track inspectors are monitoring the area around the clock.

Enrichment Data:
The prevention of avalanches on mountainous railroad tracks involves numerous safety measures, including advanced early warning systems, reinforced infrastructure, and comprehensive safety protocols. These strategies can help mitigate avalanche risks by utilizing real-time monitoring, constructing avalanche-resistant structures, and implementing specialized safety training for workers. This is crucial for reducing the hazard posed by avalanches in high-risk zones.
- The preventive measures taken on the Krasnoyarsk Railroad, such as the use of advanced warning systems and specialized training for workers, are essential to reduce the risks posed by avalanches, which are particularly relevant in the context of environmental-science and science.
- In addition to monitoring weather conditions, it's important for railroad officials to stay updated on news about scientific advancements in the field of environmental-science, as this knowledge can be crucial in implementing effective strategies for avalanche prevention and control.
