A Dead Bride in the Cornfield - Austria’s Darkly Comic Crime Hit: A Dead Bride and Village Secrets Unravel

A record-breaking Austrian crime film has gripped audiences with its darkly humorous take on rural life. Village Crime: The Dead Bride drew 1.05 million viewers on ORF 1, the highest ratings for a prime-time film on the channel since December 2022. The story follows Inspector Sifkovits as he returns to his quirky hometown to solve a shocking murder at a wedding celebration in Austria.

The trouble begins when Anna Jusic, a newlywed bride, is found dead in a cornfield the morning after her wedding to Gottlieb Kirisits. Farmer Charly Pieber stumbles upon her body, setting off a chaotic investigation. The case centres on a traditional bride-kidnapping ritual that spiralled out of control, with a rowdy group of revellers—including some hard-drinking locals—losing track of the bride during the festivities in the village.

Inspector Sifkovits, played by Thomas Stipsits, faces a maze of small-town secrets and wild rumours as he digs deeper into the crime in Austria. Among the tangled clues is an argument overheard by the innkeeper, involving a mysterious figure named Monika Maier, whose connection to the crime remains unclear. Surprisingly, Sifkovits finds backup from an unlikely source: his own mother, played by Erika Deutinger, and her sharp-witted gang of retired village women. The film’s success has already led to a third instalment, The Egg Scraper Plot, which has finished filming. Viewers can catch the first film in the series, The Dead Bride, on the ARTE media library from Thursday, January 15. The second film, Village Crime: The Uhudler Conspiracy, will then air on ARTE on Friday, January 16, at 8:15 PM.

The series blends crime with offbeat rural charm, showcasing a cast of eccentric villagers who each bring their own quirks to the story in the village. With high ratings and a growing fanbase, the films have cemented their place in Austrian television. The next chapters promise more twists from the sleepy but far-from-dull Burgenland region in Austria.
