Athletics crush Guardians with home run surge and Civale's steady arm

The Athletics secured a strong win on Sunday, backed by a trio of home runs and a solid pitching performance. Aaron Civale delivered six steady innings, while Colby Thomas, Zack Gelof, and Tyler Soderstrom all went deep to power the offence. The game also saw Nick Kurtz extend his impressive on-base streak to 28 consecutive matches.

Colby Thomas opened the scoring in the second inning with his first home run of the season. The Guardians responded, but Chase DeLauter levelled the game at 1-1 in the fifth with his sixth home run of the year.

The Athletics then broke through decisively. Zack Gelof and Tyler Soderstrom smashed back-to-back homers in the same inning, putting their team ahead. Parker Messick, the Guardians’ starter, lasted five frames but surrendered four runs on six hits. Aaron Civale held firm for the Athletics, allowing just one run on seven hits and two walks over six innings. The bullpen took over from there, with Justin Sterner, Mark Leiter Jr., and Joel Kuhnel each pitching a clean frame to seal the victory. In the seventh, Jeff McNeil added insurance with a two-out double that drove in three runs. Looking ahead, the Guardians will send Tanner Bibee (0-4, 4.08 ERA) to the mound on Monday, facing the Athletics’ Michael Wacha (2-2, 3.13 ERA).

The Athletics’ win was built on timely hitting and sharp pitching. Civale’s six innings and the bullpen’s shutout relief set the tone, while the offence capitalised with key home runs and clutch hits. The team now turns its focus to Monday’s matchup, where Wacha will aim to extend their momentum.
