Astana's new light rail transit system prepares for historic launch

Astana's Mayor Jenis Kassymbek has reviewed the progress of the light rail transit (LRT) system's trial operation, including key performance parameters and infrastructure readiness, our website reports, citing the mayor's Instagram account.

"Test runs of the LRT are nearly complete, and the system is fully operational. We plan to launch the LRT in the near future. Right now, we are actively working on infrastructure and urban improvements," the mayor stated.

He emphasized that by the time the LRT begins service, priority will be given to completing work to ensure barrier-free access to stations.

The active phase of urban improvements will continue throughout the summer. One of the key sections where work is most intensive is the stretch from Tauelsizdik Prospect to the new Nurly Zhol railway station.

"This means that the stations and their approaches will be functionally ready in the near future, while the comprehensive landscaping and architectural enhancements along the LRT route will continue until the end of the summer season. This will allow us to complete the work to the highest standards, adhering to all agronomic requirements for planting," Kassymbek concluded.

Additionally, construction is currently underway on Sh. Kaldayakov Street, between Tauelsizdik Prospect and A62 Street, with a total length of 4.6 kilometers.

The project includes a full-scale upgrade of road infrastructure: sidewalks and bike lanes, parking areas, street lighting, irrigation pipelines, and green spaces. Priority is being given to improving the areas around stations and ensuring accessible approaches for passengers.
