Astana's 'Bala Tolağay' Blends Tradition and Strength in Epic Sports Showdown

Astana is set to host the 'Bala Tolağay' city sports competitions on May 7, 2023. The event will showcase traditional and modern strength challenges, aiming to celebrate physical courage and determination. Participants and spectators alike can join in from 9:00 AM at Central Park’s main sports ground.

The competition programme features a mix of classic and folk-inspired events. Athletes will take part in javelin throw, an 8 kg sack carry, squats with a 10 kg barbell, striking a lyanga, and tug-of-war. Each test is designed to push endurance and power.

Spectators won’t just watch—they can also compete. Open challenges include pull-ups, parallel bars routines, kettlebell lifting, arm wrestling, bench press, and barbell squats. The activities will run on the main sports ground, located between the amphitheatre and The St. Regis Astana hotel. Organisers have positioned the event as a celebration of strength and resilience. From traditional Kazakh sports to modern fitness tests, the day promises a mix of competition and community spirit.

The 'Bala Tolağay' competitions begin at 9:00 AM on May 7. Central Park will host both elite athletes and casual participants in a range of physical challenges. The event’s focus on courage and endurance reflects its broader goal of fostering active, healthy lifestyles.
