Astana braces for traffic chaos as roadworks and summits collide this week
Astana Imposes Temporary Traffic Restrictions Due to International Events and Road Repairs
Traffic in Astana will face temporary restrictions due to high-profile international events and ongoing roadworks, our website reports, citing Kazakhstan's State Security Service.
From April 20 to 23, Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh will pay a state visit to Kazakhstan at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Additionally, the Regional Environmental Summit #RES2026, attended by senior officials, will kick off on April 22. That same day, the Council of Heads of State of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea will hold its session.
"Residents and visitors are asked to understand and cooperate with the enhanced security measures in place during these major international events," the State Security Service stated in its announcement.
Road Closures for Repairs
Meanwhile, Astana's city administration has announced mid-scale road repairs at several key intersections, leading to temporary traffic disruptions.
From April 20 to 25, repairs will take place on Akan Seri Street, between Tlendiyev Street and Karamenty Bi Shokauuly Street. Traffic on this stretch will be reduced to a single lane in each direction.
Starting April 20, Kenesary Street—from Sembinov Street to Saryarka Avenue—will also undergo repairs, with sections closed in phases as work progresses.
This follows earlier mid-scale repairs from April 19 to 21 at the following intersections: - Republic Avenue and A. Imanov Street - Republic Avenue and Kenesary Street - Republic Avenue and Abai Avenue
