Amazon's new Berlin hub boosts electric cargo bike deliveries across the city

Berlin (dpa/bb) — Amazon has opened another delivery hub in Berlin for last-mile package distribution using electric cargo bikes. The new facility in Treptow will serve customers in parts of Mitte, as well as Neukölln and Kreuzberg.

This marks the company's third such hub in the city, following locations in Tegel and Alexanderplatz. According to Amazon, packages are transferred from trucks to electric cargo bikes at these sites, which then complete the final leg of delivery to customers.

The bikes are not owned by Amazon itself but by a subcontractor responsible for deliveries on the company's behalf. The vehicles are manufactured by Mubea U-Mobility, based in Attendorn, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Amazon reports using around 4,500 electric delivery vehicles across Germany, with approximately 60 cargo bikes in Berlin—nearly 20 of which are now stationed at the Treptow hub.

"Berlin is particularly well-suited for bike deliveries because the terrain is flat," said Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) at the hub's opening. She also noted that the city's many courtyard buildings made it possible to repurpose existing space, eliminating the need for new construction.
