Alexander Zverev Advances to Toronto Masters Semi-Finals

Alexander Zverev showcased a strong comeback in the National Bank Open in Toronto, reaching the semi-finals of the ATP Masters event. After a challenging start against Alexei Popyrin, Zverev secured his place in the next round with a 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The German tennis star, who has 501 victories on the ATP Tour, began the match against Francisco Cerúndolo with a 6-4 win in the first set after 46 minutes. However, Cerúndolo retired during the second set, allowing Zverev to progress.

Zverev's performance in Toronto follows a week-long training break at the Rafa Nadal Academy in July. His time off seems to have paid off, as he served exceptionally well, winning 82% of his first-serve points and closing out 16 of his last 17 service points.

After a physically and mentally exhausting run at Wimbledon, Zverev took some time off and travelled to Mallorca to train at Rafael Nadal's academy with his uncle Toni. This break appears to have rejuvenated Zverev, as he has maintained his rest until the end of the season, hoping to peak at the right time.

In the next round, Zverev will face Popyrin from Australia. Zverev acknowledged Popyrin's capabilities, stating that he is a great player and is playing his best tennis in Canada. The German is aiming to build on his success in Toronto, with his sights set on the season finale in Turin.

Zverev's consistent performance throughout the season, including a title in Munich and deep runs in Rome, Roland Garros, Stuttgart, and Halle, demonstrates his ability to bounce back after breaks or slumps. His improved mental growth and emotional management have also contributed to his on-court composure.

With his performance in Toronto, Zverev has reached his 75th tour-level semi-final and his 21st Masters 1000 semi-final, his first at this level since last year’s Paris Masters. His journey in Toronto continues, as he aims to secure a spot in the final and potentially claim another title.
