Zverev's Europa squad takes the lead in day one of Laver Cup competition.
In the heart of San Francisco, where the Golden State Warriors usually take the court for NBA games, the Laver Cup is underway. This Ryder Cup-style team competition, featuring a total of 12 matches over three days, is showcasing some of the best tennis players in the world.
As we approach the third day, Team Europe, led by Yannick Noah and Tim Henman, holds a 3:1 advantage over Team World, led by Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter.
On Saturday, the players for Team World include Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Francisco Cerundolo, Joao Fonseca, Alex Michelsen, and Reilly Opelka. Notable absences for Team World include John Isner and Denis Shapovalov, who were part of the team last year.
The European tennis team has had a strong start, with Jiri Vesely extending their lead to 2:0 with a win over Alex Michelsen, with a score of 6:1, 6:7 (3:7), 10-8. Casper Ruud secured another victory for Team Europe over Team World with a score of 6:4, 7:6 (7:4).
The doubles match between Czech player Jiri Vesely and Carlos Alcaraz, the world number one, increased Team Europe’s lead to 3:1 over Team World. Alcaraz and Vesely defeated Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen with a score of 7:6 (9:7), 6:4.
Alexander Zverev, who missed the first two days of the competition due to an injury, is expected to make his first appearance on the court on Saturday.
Last year, Europe defeated Team World 13:11 in the Laver Cup held in Berlin. Joao Sousa secured a victory for Team World with a score of 6:4, 6:3 over Flavio Cobolli.
To win the Laver Cup, a team must secure 13 points. On the second day, two points were awarded per match, and on the first day, one point was awarded for each match won. On the third day, three points will be up for grabs in each match, with the addition of a 'Champions Tiebreak' in the deciding third set.
In the seven previous Laver Cup encounters, Team Europe has won five times. As the competition progresses, it remains to be seen if Team World can close the gap and take the lead. Stay tuned for updates from San Francisco.
