Tennis: Zverev Battles Through Health Woes to Reach Semis
Zverev Reaches Semi-Finals Again in Halle Following Bout of Nausea
Halle/Westfalen (dpa) - Tennis prodigy Alexander Zverev is bound for the semifinals of the grass-court tourney in Halle, Westphalia, for the third year in a row. The world number three defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli 6:4, 7:6 (8:6) in the quarterfinals. Zverev goes head-to-head with Russian Daniil Medvedev in the semis this Saturday.
A Scary Health Hiccup
Zverev faced some serious health complications right off the bat against Hamburg champ Cobolli. After breaking his opponent's opening service game, sweat pouring down his forehead, he bolted from the court at 1:0, 40:40 due to stomach problems, only to return three minutes later, pale and shaky. Tennis fans might recall similar troubles he encountered a few weeks back in Hamburg.
"I was feeling great before the match, then, all of a sudden, I couldn't stomach it, had to bail, and threw up. Never had that happen before," Zverev confessed. "After that, I think I played a hell of a match."
The Breaker Seals the Deal
After coming back to the court, the German whiz touched his stomach a few times but maintained his focus, wrapping up the first set in 47 minutes. In the second set, both players kept their service games near perfect. Zverev missed two break opportunities at 2:2. The dust-up was settled in the tiebreak, where Zverev bagged his second match point after 1 hour and 40 minutes.
