Zverev's French Open Domination Continues
Zverev is in motion.
Paris, France (dpa) - The amazing run of Alexander Zverev at the French Open continues, as he reached the quarterfinals for the seventh time in eight years. The German tennis sensation bested Italian clay-court specialist Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, displaying an impressive performance on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Zverev's record at the French Open is nothing short of remarkable, having made it to at least the semifinals in four of the last five years, including runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2024. His resilience and determination seem to thrive on the clay courts of Paris.
In his match against Cobolli, Zverev took control from the outset, breaking the Italian's serve right off the bat. "I was in top form from the first point," Zverev said after the match. Cobolli, who made waves by winning the tournament in Hamburg a week prior, struggled to match Zverev's intensity.
The second set was a battle for concentration, with both players trading breaks. Zverev saved two set points in the tiebreaker to ultimately take the set, which proved to be the turning point in the match.
From then on, Zverev played with a relentless force, ensuring a comfortable victory over Cobolli in just over two hours. "This court holds a special place in my heart," Zverev said, reflecting on his past performances and the heartbreak of a severe ankle injury sustained in the semifinals against Rafael Nadal three years ago.
Zverev's next opponent will be Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor, whom he defeated in a hard-fought three-set match in Munich earlier this year. Looking ahead, Zverev faces tough competition, as he may potentially square off against reigning champion and current record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.
Another player to watch is 26-year-old Daniel Altmaier, who defeated American Frances Tiafoe to advance to the round of 16. Altmaier has previously reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in 2020, a unique edition held in the fall due to the pandemic, and without spectators.
Zverev aims to clinch his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, as he continues to demonstrate solid form and mental fortitude. However, he faces fierce competition from top players like Djokovic and contenders Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who have also shown great promise at the French Open.
