Zverev's Heartbreak Against Djokovic: Out of the French Open
- 🕒 ~ 3 Min
Zverev falls short against Djokovic - Elimination at the French Open Tournament - Zverev experiences frustration in his clash against Djokovic.
Alexander Zverev took a swift exit, leaving the stage for Novak Djokovic as the victor. Zverev failed to secure a spot in the semifinals, continuing his ongoing hunt for his initial Grand Slam title. The reigning finalist fell to Djokovic in Paris, losing 6:4, 3:6, 2:6, 4:6 in their quarterfinal match. Djokovic secured his victory following a grueling 3:17 hours of play, claiming his fifth match point.
The Serbian consistently irked Zverev, who played passively, with multiple interruptions. Tennis legend Boris Becker on Eurosport commented, "Against players like Djokovic, or even Sinner and Alcaraz, you need to seize those points. You need to be the actively aggressive one and believe in the win. That was evident at the start with Sascha, but unfortunately, that wasn't sustained throughout the match."
Zverev's Promising Start
Heading into Wednesday evening, Zverev had displayed impressive form at his preferred Grand Slam tournament. Against Djokovic, the defending finalist began powerfully, promptly breaking the Serbian's serve. From there, Zverev took control of the game and managed to navigate through a critical situation in the first set where he defended a break point at 4:3. After 46 minutes, Zverev won the first set.
This accomplishment was part of Zverev's plan to apply pressure on the aged Djokovic. Prior to the match, Djokovic had already clinched the ATP tournament in Geneva, arriving in Paris late.
Becker, in a Eurosport interview, had earlier highlighted fitness as a key factor in the match. "Sascha Zverev might be the strongest player still left in the competition Physically," Becker noted.
Djokovic's Intellectual Edge
However, Djokovic countered with his vast experience and clever strategy. After winning the first set, Zverev momentarily faltered, and Djokovic seized the opportunity with an early break for 3:1. From then on, Zverev found himself struggling to catch up. Djokovic displayed a higher level of tactical prowess as compared to Zverev, leading to multiple stops that wore on the German. By the end of 1:41 hours, Djokovic had leveled the score.
Zverev's form had visibly deteriorated. He often gazed at his team on the sidelines, with little assistance offered. It seemed that Zverev's squad had failed to devise a plan to defeat the grand slam champion. Djokovic merely needed to maintain the ball in play, which Zverev unintentionally contributed to with numerous simple errors.
Zverev's Clueless Exit
Zverev's lackluster reaction to the increasing likelihood of defeat was astounding. The German No. 1 maintained an emotionless demeanor throughout, watching as Djokovic dominated in various phases. Even in the fourth set, Zverev allowed another break without any discernible reaction.
On the brink of elimination, Zverev had one last opportunity to turn the tide at 2:3. However, the 41-shot rally in that critical moment evaded Zverev, who missed opportunities to win at least twice. As usual, Zverev seemed to lack the determination needed to rally back. To the delight of the crowd, Djokovic finally secured his fifth match point, completing the upset following Zverev's error.
Djokovic, seeded sixth, faces off against number one yet unseeded Jannik Sinner in the next round for the final spot. Sinner has been fierce on the Stade Roland Garros courts, eliminating Kazakh Alexander Bublik 6:1, 7:5, 6:0 without dropping a set.
The three-month doping ban appears to have invigorated the 23-year-old Sinner, who exhibited both freshness and determination in his matches.
Zverev's French Open story concludes in another disappointment. Aiming for his next major goal, Wimbledon, set to begin on June 30th, Zverev will shift his focus to the grass courts in Stuttgart and Halle.
