Paris (dpa) - With the French Open in full swing, Germany's top tennis player, Alexander Zverev, is gearing up for some tough battles. In the round of 16, he easily dispatched Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who had to retire due to an abdominal injury, trailing 6:4, 3:0.

With an eye on the prize, Zverev faces a steep climb from here on out. In the quarterfinals on Wednesday, he'll go head-to-head with none other than Novak Djokovic. The record Grand Slam champion secured his spot with a dominating 6:2, 6:3, 6:2 victory over British player Cameron Norrie, picking up his 100th win at Stade Roland Garros. Only 14-time Paris champion Rafael Nadal has more wins at the French Open (112).

Zverev Prepares for Djokovic

"It's going to be a tough match, a real fight where we'll both be prepared," said Zverev about the high-stakes showdown with Djokovic. Despite the Serb's occasional struggles with health issues and an unusually high number of losses this year, Zverev is undeterred. "Novak has won 24 Grand Slam tournaments. He will never be an underdog."

After his brief appearance against Griekspoor, Zverev swiftly headed to the training court. The 28-year-old spent some time on Court 10 and plans to spend the rest of the day at the hotel. For Zverev, it'll mark his fifth consecutive Paris quarterfinal.

Challenging Path Ahead

If Zverev bests Djokovic, he could find himself facing world No. 1 Jannik Sinner next and potentially meet defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final. "I've got one of the toughest draws you can imagine from now on," said Zverev. "I'm looking forward to the battles with the big guys and will do my best to win all three matches."

Griekspoor's Misfortune

His round of 16 opponent was deeply disappointed. "It happened this morning during warm-up," Griekspoor said with a frown. "I tried because it was one of the most important matches of my career on one of the most beautiful courts against a player I usually play well against," said Griekspoor.

But it quickly became apparent that the Dutchman was outmatched, consistently slowing down his serve. "It's hard to win against him when I'm fit," Griekspoor conceded. "If not, it's pointless, he's too good for that." Zverev acknowledged the role Griekspoor's injury played in his win.

Becker's Compassion

Legendary tennis player Boris Becker showed sympathy for the Dutchman. "That's a difficult injury, as you need your abdominal muscles for every stroke," said Becker as an expert on Eurosport. "Zverev's advancement is just how it is. He can't worry about it now. He didn't get tested today and has a longer afternoon ahead."

Zverev initially faced some challenges on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, the second-largest stadium on the site. The 28-year-old lost his first service game and exhibited signs of dissatisfaction, engaging in heated discussions with his team on the tribune.

An Inconvenient Fly

However, Zverev soon found his focus and fought back from an early 0:3 deficit. Griekspoor continued to touch his abdominal muscle during breaks, sporting a large bandage during the shirt exchange. Alexander Zverev couldn't be deterred by a brief moment of panic. At 2:3, 15:15, the Hamburg native accidentally swallowed a fly and had a brief coughing fit. Zverev briefly halted his serve to take a drink of water before returning to the court and firing off an ace.

"Swallowing a fly tastes terrible, but perhaps he should do it more often if it leads to an ace," joked Becker during the live broadcast.

The tennis match between Zverev and Djokovic promises to be a challenging one, echoing the sentiments of a sports contest between two seasoned players. Even with Griekspoor's departure from the tournament due to an injury, the quality of tennis played by the Dutchman was undeniably impressive, leaving a lasting impact on Zverev's progress towards the French Open title.
