Zverev and Bencic kick off mixed doubles competition at the US Open in the initial rounds
US Open Mixed Doubles: Zverev and Bencic Exit Early
The US Open Mixed Doubles competition has seen an early exit for tennis stars Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic. The pair, who won Olympic gold in 2021, lost in the first round to the American duo Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison with a score of 0:4, 3:5.
The match, which lasted just 41 minutes, ended on a double fault from Bencic. The pair struggled particularly in the first set, and it seemed that they made too many unforced errors during the game.
Zverev and Bencic were originally scheduled to face Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova, but Sinner withdrew due to illness. The competition, which is being held mid-week before the actual start of the Grand Slam tournament and over just two days (19 and 20 August), has seen criticism of its new format.
Despite the early exit, Zverev was still recovering from physical issues he faced at the Masters-1000 tournament in Cincinnati. The heat in Ohio also posed a challenge for the world number three, as it did for fellow player Jannik Sinner.
The competition is being held in the main stadiums, and a total of 16 teams are competing for the mixed doubles title. The semifinals and final are scheduled for Wednesday, with the prize money for the winning team increased to one million US dollars.
Unlike Sinner, Zverev did not withdraw from the US Open, but his performance was not successful. Eight places were awarded through wildcards, and it remains to be seen who will emerge as the eventual champions.
Top stars typically do not participate in mixed doubles to focus on the singles competition, which begins next Sunday. The matches will be played with shortened sets, adding to the intensity of the competition.
As the US Open continues, fans will be eagerly awaiting the singles competition to begin and seeing who will emerge as the champions in both the men's and women's draws.
