Zverev and Bencic grid for mixed doubles at US Open commences prematurely
The US Open is hosting a new addition to its schedule this year, the mixed doubles competition, which is being held mid-week before the actual start of the Grand Slam tournament and over just two days (August 19 and 20). However, the excitement surrounding this change has been dampened by criticism and an early exit for some of the tournament's big names.
Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic, who have known each other since childhood and won Olympic gold in 2021, were among the first to compete in the new format. Yet, their journey was short-lived as they lost in the first round. The pair struggled in the first set and ended up losing to Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison 0:4, 3:5.
Zverev was still dealing with physical issues from the Masters-1000 tournament in Cincinnati, where he managed to reach the semifinals. These issues seemed to have affected his performance in the mixed doubles competition. The duo made too many unforced errors, contributing to their defeat after 41 minutes, with a double fault by Bencic sealing their fate.
The new format has been met with dismay, particularly among doubles specialists. Eight spots were awarded through wildcards, a decision that has raised eyebrows in the tennis community. The top stars, who usually focus on the singles competition, are not typically seen in the mixed doubles. However, this year's competition has seen some of the sport's biggest names participating, including Zverev and Bencic.
The matches are being played with shortened sets and held in the main stadiums, adding to the excitement. Despite the controversy and early exits, the competition is set to continue with the semifinals and final scheduled for Wednesday. The prize money for the winning team has been increased to one million US dollars, adding an extra incentive for the remaining teams.
As the US Open tournament proper begins next Sunday, the focus will shift back to the singles competition. However, the mixed doubles competition has certainly provided an interesting prelude to the Grand Slam event, with its unique format and high-profile participants. The question remains whether this new addition will become a permanent fixture in the US Open schedule.
