In the lead-up to the main draw of the Grand Slam tournament, the US Open is hosting a unique mixed doubles competition over two days (August 19 and 20). Amidst the excitement, a significant debate has arisen regarding the legitimacy and competitive fairness of the new format.

The core of the controversy revolves around a shortened scoring system and altered format, with sets played to four games, no advantage scoring at deuce, and a 10-point tie-break instead of a full third set. Some, including prominent players, view this event more like an exhibition than a genuine competition, questioning whether it produces a "true" Grand Slam mixed doubles champion.

Another concern is the allocation of wildcards and prize money distribution. While specific complaints about these factors are not widely detailed, discussions suggest that they affect the competition's integrity and player incentives, implying that increased prize money has not sufficiently addressed broader structural or competitive concerns.

Eight places were awarded through wildcards, causing displeasure among doubles specialists. This decision, coupled with the shortened format, has led some to question the event's legitimacy as a Grand Slam event.

In the midst of the controversy, top stars such as Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic, who have known each other since childhood, were unable to find their rhythm in the competition. Zverev, currently ranked as the world number three in tennis, seemed to be still feeling the effects of physical issues he faced at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event. The pair, originally scheduled to face Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova, lost the first round to Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison with a score of 0:4, 3:5.

Despite the criticism, some players, including Zverev and Bencic, believe that the new format offers benefits such as faster-paced matches and improved viewing experiences. However, the core debate about legitimacy and competitive fairness remains significant among fans and some professionals.

As the competition progresses, it will be interesting to see how the US Open addresses these concerns and whether the mixed doubles event can regain its prestige in the eyes of the tennis community.
