The 2025 US Open mixed doubles event is stirring up controversy, with critics voicing their concerns over the tournament's novel format. The main points of contention revolve around the shortened scoring system, condensed schedule, and changes in entry criteria and field size.

In a departure from traditional tennis scoring, sets are now limited to four games with no-ad scoring and a 10-point match tiebreaker instead of a full third set through the semifinals. This shift has left some fans and players feeling unfamiliar and less satisfied compared to the classic best-of-three sets to six games format.

Another contentious issue is the compressed schedule, with all matches being played over two days during the qualifying week, rather than throughout the main tournament. This change has disrupted the traditional rhythm of mixed doubles events at Grand Slams, sparking debate among stakeholders.

The new format has also seen a reduction in the number of participating teams to just 16, potentially limiting opportunities and variety in the draw. Additionally, the use of singles rankings rather than doubles rankings for entry is unusual and may affect the competitive dynamic of the mixed doubles.

Despite the format's intention to boost interest and visibility in mixed doubles at the US Open, these changes have not gone unnoticed. For instance, in the first round of the event, top-seeded pair Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic, who won Olympic gold in 2021, were almost helpless in the first set against Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison. The match, played in the main stadiums, lasted just 41 minutes and ended with a double fault from Bencic, resulting in a score of 0:4, 3:5.

Meanwhile, the US Open mixed doubles event has seen increased attendance and TV attention, with big-name teams in marquee stadiums during "Fan Week." However, with top stars typically choosing to focus on the singles event, which begins next Sunday, the event has yet to attract the same level of star power as in previous years.

Eight places in the mixed doubles event were filled by wildcards, and the prize money for the winning team has been increased to one million US dollars. The second round will take place on Tuesday, with the semifinals and final scheduled for Wednesday.

As the tournament unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the new format will prove to be a success or continue to face criticism. One thing is certain: the US Open mixed doubles event is shaping up to be an exciting competition, with 16 teams vying for the title.
