Zurich's public transport hits record 309 million passengers in 2025

Zurich's public transport network saw a steady rise in passenger numbers last year. The city's operator, VBZ, carried 309 million travellers in 2025—an increase of 5.2 million compared to 2024. The wider region also experienced growth, with key factors including population density and new attractions.

Across Zurich, ridership on buses, trams, and trolleybuses climbed by 1.7 percent in 2025. Tram line 15 stood out, adding 1.4 million passengers over the previous year. The opening of a new children's hospital also drove up numbers on line 99.

The surrounding region recorded an even sharper rise, with 784,500 more passengers—a 3.5 percent increase. The Glattal and Limmattal valleys, along with the Zimmerberg area, saw the highest demand. Growth rates in these zones reached 4.1 percent, 4.1 percent, and 5.3 percent respectively. New leisure facilities and rising residential density played a major role in the surge. Service upgrades further supported the trend. Trolleybus line 83 introduced Sunday schedules, while bus line 66 extended its route. However, the Pfannenstiel region bucked the trend, with bus passenger numbers dipping by 1 percent.

The overall rise in public transport use reflects both service improvements and regional development. With 309 million journeys in Zurich alone, the network continues to expand its reach. The growth pattern highlights shifting travel habits in and around the city.
