Zurich Rejects Cashless Push, Keeps Cash for All City Services

Zurich City Council has turned down a proposal to phase out cash payments for municipal services, instead deciding to keep cash as an option across all city-run facilities. The move follows public backlash over cashless policies at key cultural events and institutions, such as the Zurich Art Museum and the Winter Magic event, which stopped accepting cash and sparked criticism. The council has now confirmed that cash will remain a valid payment method, including for online payments, in all municipal institutions. City authorities will also review how to better support cash transactions, including through cash apps, in the future. No specific politician or party was named in connection with the proposal to retain cash payments. While some German city administrations planned to limit cash payments by late 2025 and early 2026, Zurich has taken a different stance, ensuring that residents and visitors can continue using cash for city services without restrictions. The council’s ruling means cash payments will stay in place for all Zurich-run facilities, including for online services. A review will now assess how to maintain cash accessibility across municipal services. The decision comes after public opposition to cashless policies at major cultural venues.
