Zoological Park Proposes Request for Public's Domestic Animals to Sustain Predatory Species, Ignites Outrage on Social Networking Sites

Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has stirred up a storm of controversy with its unconventional pet donation policy. The zoo is asking the public to donate unwanted small pets such as chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even horses, to be used as food for its predatory animals.

The zoo argues that this practice is to imitate the natural food chain and promote the natural behavior, nutrition, and well-being of its predators. Key details of the policy include:

  • Donations of small pets are accepted only on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and limited to no more than four animals at a time.
  • Donated animals are gently euthanized by trained staff before being used as fodder, ensuring nothing goes to waste and maintaining animal welfare standards.
  • For horses, which are larger donations, the zoo euthanizes and slaughters them for food with veterinary oversight. Horses eligible for donation must not have been treated for illness for at least one month, meet size restrictions, and be fit for safe transport.
  • Donors of horses can receive a tax deduction for the value of the horse given to the zoo.
  • Aalborg Zoo notes that animal needs vary throughout the year and that there may be a waiting list for donations.

This policy has generated considerable controversy online, with many people expressing shock and disbelief. The zoo's Facebook post was met with public outcry, with users questioning the ethics of the practice and expressing disbelief that anyone would donate their pet to a zoo to be killed and used as feed.

One user called the zoo's practice "deeply perverse and degrading," while another asked if the zoo's request was a joke. The Facebook post's comment section is filled with alarmed web users.

Gizmodo reached out to Aalborg Zoo for more information on their unusual policy, but the zoo has not yet responded. The zoo has closed the comment track on the post due to the outrage.

Despite the controversy, the zoo maintains that its practice is essential for the natural behavior, nutrition, and well-being of its predators. Similar practices have been reported with other Danish zoos in the past.

It is unclear whether the public outcry will lead to changes in the zoo's policy, but it has certainly sparked a debate about the ethics of zoos and their role in animal welfare.
