Zombie Dong's Resurrection in '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple'

The much-anticipated third film in the 28 Years Later trilogy is on the horizon, with plans dependent on the success of its predecessor, 28 Years Later, released in 2025. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have expressed a strong intent to complete the trilogy, with Boyle confirming he wants to direct the third film if the financing can be secured.

The second film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, was shot back-to-back with the first and is scheduled for release in January 2026. This means the third film is expected relatively soon, assuming all goes well with production and financing.

Regarding the return of key characters, Cillian Murphy, who played Jim in the first film, will not be reprising his role in the second but remains involved as an executive producer. Boyle hinted that Murphy could return in the third film and be a dominant factor if the film gets funded, suggesting that a key returning character from earlier films may appear. However, no specific confirmation about the character Samson is available.

The trilogy, which features interconnected but distinct stories, is said to have an evolving creative process similar to TV series production. Sony Pictures' chairman, Tom Rothman, is optimistic about the possibility of a third film, citing the strong start and positive reviews as factors contributing to its potential.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, known for her work on Candyman and The Marvels, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple depicts all Rage virus-infected zombies as naked. The film's release date is set for January 16, 2026. If all goes according to plan, we can expect Danny Boyle to return to the director's chair for the third film, with Cillian Murphy's character expected to appear.
