Zohran Mamdani intensifies the verbal exchanges as Albany leaders bow in submission to him
In the upcoming New York mayoral election, a surprising twist has emerged as frontrunner Zohran Mamdani garners support from unexpected quarters. Despite previously opposing his tax-hike plans, Governor Kathy Hochul has endorsed Mamdani, signaling a potential shift in political alliances.
Mamdani, known for his progressive stance, has made waves with his initiatives. He launched a petition campaign, pressuring FIFA to cap World Cup ticket prices and offer discounts for local residents. This action suggests that, if elected, Mamdani may also pressure local businesses, such as Broadway theatres, to reserve tickets for locals at cheaper prices.
However, Mamdani's political stance remains unyielding. He plans to raise the top corporate tax rate to 11.5% and increase the personal income tax rate on the top 1% by 2%. This move has sparked concerns among some political figures, such as Long Island Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen, who won her seat by a narrow margin last year. Gillen expressed horror at Hochul's endorsement, citing the need to bring down taxes, not raise them, as a priority.
Betsy McCaughey, a former lieutenant governor of New York, estimates that 500,000 voters now back Mamdani, not a significant gain over the 469,000 who chose him in the first round of the Democratic primary. Yet, the support is enough to position Mamdani as a strong contender in the race.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has also endorsed Mamdani, a move that could significantly influence the implementation of Mamdani's tax-hike plans. Heastie's endorsement is crucial, as the consent of the state Legislature, particularly Heastie, is required to reactivate the Financial Control Board, which could potentially rescue Gotham from a financial debacle.
Mamdani's petition also asked for signers to pledge their votes to him, a move that underscores his confidence in his campaign. With the election approaching, all bets, including Hochul's, may be off in this high-turnout election. The potential for a ceiling on support for Mamdani, and the financial implications of his proposed tax hikes, remain key factors to watch in the race for New York City's mayoral seat.
