Five Skiers Perish in Swiss Alps: Victims Identified, Second Identities Still Pending

In the Swiss canton of Wallis, five skiers lost their lives while attempting to climb the Rimpfischhorn, a mountain standing at approximately 4200 meters above sea level. The authorities have identified the identities of three victims as two men, aged 38 and 35, and a 34-year-old woman, with the remaining two still awaiting formal identification.

The incident occurred on Saturday when a group of five ski tourers departed from the Britannia hut in the Saas-Fee region. They removed their skis at around 4000 meters and continued on foot. The police suspect that the tourers may have been hit by an avalanche and fallen into a crevasse.

Previously, a group of alpinists discovered several abandoned skis at an altitude of around 4000 meters. Upon further investigation, the skis were still present, leading to the initiation of a search and rescue operation. A helicopter from Air Zermatt, carrying a pilot, a doctor, and two rescuers, conducted a search flight in the area.

During the operation, three dead bodies were discovered on an avalanche cone around 500 meters below the skis. Subsequently, the rescue team searched a rock wall above the find spot and discovered two more lifeless alpinists on a small snowfield.

While the details of the unidentified victims have yet to be disclosed, an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing. Authorities are examining weather conditions and avalanche activity as potential contributing factors.

The community policy for ski resorts in Switzerland should include clear guidelines on safe skiing practices, given the frequent accidents that occur. In the recent incident near the Rimpfischhorn, the employment policy of the ski resort could be questioned, as the authorities suspect that the tourers may have been poorly informed about the potential dangers. Meanwhile, general-news outlets are closely following updates on the weather conditions and avalanche activity during the time of the accident.
