"Zenit" Pursues Legal Action Against Rakitski for Defamatory Remarks
Former Zenit Defender Yaroslav Rakitsky's Controversial Exit
Ukrainian footballer Yaroslav Rakitsky spent three successful seasons with St. Petersburg's Zenit, from 2019 to 2022, during which he became a key defender and one of the team's leaders. He won four Russian championships, the national cup, and two Russian Super Cups with the club.
However, Rakitsky's departure from Zenit in March 2022, officially cited as a contract termination due to family reasons, was not without controversy. The footballer made profanity-laced comments about his time playing for the Russian club, sparking widespread reaction in sports and political circles.
Despite this, Rakitsky's tenure with Zenit ended without any reported disputes or conflicts, nor were there any allegations of misconduct or breach of contract. After his departure, Rakitsky was represented by the agency 'Promesport' until 2022.
Dmitry Svyischev, a first deputy chairman of the State Duma committee for physical culture and sports, suggested that Zenit consider filing a lawsuit against Rakitsky. Svyischev emphasised that Rakitsky has significantly changed his stance, now portraying himself as a 'patriot of Ukraine.' A successful lawsuit against Rakitsky, according to Svyischev, could set an important precedent for protecting the interests of Russian football clubs.
Svyischev noted that Rakitsky successfully played for Zenit for three years and received his salary. He also proposed that the club's legal department examine Rakitsky's contract for clauses protecting the club's reputation even after the player's departure.
Prior to his departure, Rakitsky expressed pride in his tenure with Zenit. However, his comments about the club after his departure have raised questions about his loyalty and respect for the club. No information is currently available about Rakitsky's current club or activities.
As of now, no legal actions have been taken or proposed by Zenit against Rakitsky. The footballer's current stance on Ukraine or Russia is also unknown.
