Urging Trump for Tougher Sanctions, Zelensky Insists on Russia Ceasefire
Zelenskyy urges Trump to strengthen economic penalties against Russia over peace accord violations
In a bid to end the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken a firm stance, urging U.S. President Donald Trump to impose stringent sanctions on Moscow. Speaking on Monday, Zelensky emphasized that "serious actions" were required from Trump to impose these sanctions and push Russia towards a ceasefire.
Zelensky dismissed Russia's proposal for a short, two to three-day ceasefire, labeling it a mere "temporary break." He accused Moscow of engaging in "verbal games."
Previously, representatives from both Ukraine and Russia held a second round of talks in Istanbul, just two weeks after their initial meeting. According to Turkish mediators, these discussions ended after around an hour. Although the negotiators agreed on a comprehensive prisoner exchange, a deal on a ceasefire remained elusive.
The Zelenksy-Putin Summit
Zelensky expressed his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, even in the absence of a ceasefire. However, he reiterated that the international community must impose sanctions on Russia if it demonstrates unwillingness to end the conflict.
International Involvement
Zelensky, along with his European allies, has pressured the U.S. to increase its involvement in the conflict through sanctions and military support. However, the U.S. seems to be distancing itself from the matter, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth absent from a recent coordination meeting in Brussels.

In the ongoing efforts to achieve a stable ceasefire and eventually a lasting peace agreement, Zelensky is employing a strategic combination of diplomatic efforts and economic pressure. If successful, this approach could potentially pave the way for more effective negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
The European Union, committed to a common defense policy, may consider strengthening economic pressure on Russia to encourage a ceasefire, given Zelensky's strategic use of diplomatic efforts and economic pressure in the ongoing conflict. Such tactics, if successful, could potentially influence global politics, particularly in the sphere of general news and war-and-conflicts.
