Zelenskyy reveals scheduled encounter with Trump
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, is set to meet US President Donald Trump next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. This meeting comes after diplomatic efforts, including meetings in Istanbul, have failed to achieve a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The focus of the discussions between Zelensky and Trump will be on security guarantees for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. The Ukrainian government has been demanding such guarantees as part of an agreement to end the Russian invasion of its neighboring country.
Trump had previously stated that he would quickly resolve the conflict in Ukraine upon his return to office. However, despite his statements, there has been no significant progress in resolving the conflict, which has been ongoing for more than three and a half years.
The meetings in Istanbul resulted in agreements for prisoner exchanges but made no progress towards a ceasefire. The conflict, initiated by Russia, remains unresolved.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed opposition to the deployment of Western soldiers in Ukraine, describing it as unacceptable. He has also warned that Western soldiers in Ukraine would be a 'legitimate' target. Putin met Trump at a summit in the US state of Alaska in mid-August.
Besides Turkey and the USA, diplomatic mediation efforts to end the war in Ukraine involve Saudi Arabia, the European Union (including leaders from France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, and Finland), the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Switzerland, which have all shown readiness to host or facilitate talks.
Recently, the US President has expressed disappointment with Putin's behavior. Ukraine seeks security guarantees from the West as the only concrete result of the recent diplomatic efforts. The discussions between Zelensky and Trump will be crucial in determining the future course of action in resolving this long-standing conflict.
